Sixes Elementary School was named the overall champion at the second annual CCSD Elementary School Math Competition.  The team is made up of Josie Bice, Barrett Bicking, Patterson Carter, Charlie Dabbs, Olivia Dailey, Arley Eison, Jack Ford, Noah Garner, Maddox Gourley, Hailey Holton, Jack Kriz, Reagan Mathena, James Shannon, Eliot Smith, Hunter Wheeler, Ellie Wise.  Their coaches are teachers Stephanie Paige, Marie Coleman and Clint Parker.  The team was joined in celebrating by Principal Dr. Ashley Kennerly, left.

Several hundred young mathematicians participated in the second annual CCSD Elementary School Math Competition, with Sixes Elementary School named the overall champion!

Students in fourth and fifth grade put their ciphering skills to the test in individual and team competitions during the event held earlier this month at Dean Rusk Middle School.

During the individual competition, students solved problems on a whiteboard during a series of timed challenges.  For the team competition, teams of up to four students were given 10 math problems to solve with four minutes per problem.  Teams were able to collaborate, calculate and submit their solution to earn points.  Points from both individual and team competitions contributed to the school’s overall score.

Trophies were awarded to the top two individual winners for each grade level, with trophies and ribbons awarded to the members of the two top-scoring teams for each grade level.  The school with the highest combined individual and team scores won the overall district trophy.  When all the answers were submitted and checked, Sixes ES took first-place honors with the most accumulated points, with Avery ES claiming second place and Little River ES earning third.

“Math is a critical core skill we want all of our students to master, and this special event is another way to encourage learning and celebrate academic achievement,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “Congratulations to all of the winners!  We’re proud of them and of every student and teacher who dedicated after school time to practice in preparation for this event.”

The Sixes ES team is made up of Josie Bice, Barrett Bicking, Patterson Carter, Charlie Dabbs, Olivia Dailey, Arley Eison, Jack Ford, Noah Garner, Maddox Gourley, Hailey Holton, Jack Kriz, Reagan Mathena, James Shannon, Eliot Smith, Hunter Wheeler, Ellie Wise.  Their coaches are teachers Stephanie Paige, Marie Coleman and Clint Parker.

Designed by the Office of Curriculum & Instruction, the goal of the event is to encourage students’ interest in math, develop their problem-solving skills and inspire them to excel and have fun with mathematics.  Participating schools formed after-school math clubs based on student interest and, if needed, held tryouts to select a competition team from the club’s membership.  Schools could enter one or two teams per grade level.
