CCSD Hosts Annual Elementary School Math Competition

CCSD Hosts Annual Elementary School Math Competition

Several hundred young mathematicians participated in the third annual CCSD Elementary School Math Competition, with Hickory Flat Elementary School named the overall champion!

Students in fourth and fifth grade put their math skills to the test in individual and team competitions during the event earlier this month.  The school with the highest combined individual and team scores won the overall district trophy: Hickory Flat ES earned first-place honors, with Avery ES claiming second place for the third year in a row and Liberty ES placing third.

The Hickory Flat ES team is made up of fifth-graders Ethan Lindsey, Eva Maldonado, Ava Murray, Brantlynn Palmer, Kyra Parekh, Graham Plousis, Max Silverman, Ella Kate Wood; and fourth-graders Grace Hardie, Kennedy McCord, Shri Sanevelli, Charvik Sirivella, Alina Skudarnova, Kelsey Starner and Perla Sula.  Their coaches are fifth-grade teacher Michelle Kozak and fourth-grade teacher Chris Phillips.

“Congratulations to all of our winners – we are proud of your dedication to math and learning!” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “We want every student to master critical math skills, and this tournament is an engaging way to encourage a love of learning and to reward achievement.  Thank you to all of the teachers, staff and volunteers who make math learning, these teams and this event possible.”

Organized by the Office of Curriculum & Instruction, the event’s goal is to encourage math learning and develop problem-solving skills.  During individual competition, students solve problems on a whiteboard during timed challenges.  For team competition, teams of as many as four students work to solve 10 math problems with four minutes per problem.  Participating schools formed after-school math clubs based on student interest and, if needed, held tryouts to select a competition team.  Schools could enter one or two teams per grade level.

Trophies were awarded to the top two individual winners for each grade level, with trophies and ribbons awarded to the members of the two top-scoring teams for each grade level.

Congratulations to this year’s team and individual winners:
